After two years, we switched from Apple AirPods 2 (Review) to Pro 2 to find out whether they’re actually good or just hype. Let’s check that in this Apple AirPods Pro 2 review!
We have also reviewed a few other Apple Products: a green iPhone 13 (Review) and a Blue iPhone 15 (Review) paired with Apple AirPods Pro 2.
All the reviews are live, except the Apple AirPods Pro 2 review, and here’s the one!
This will cover everything you should know before buying the Pro 2 AirPods. From a Non-Pro user perspective, here are all the big changes!
With that said, welcome to PadhkeDekho. Let’s kick things off with the pros and cons.
PROS
- Great built quality
- Comfortable for long hours of use
- Best in class ANC & calling
- Great audio quality
- Battery Backup is good
- Tons of customizations are available
- Touch controls + Hey Siri works gre
CONS
- One color option
Built Quality 9.5/10
One thing where beating Apple is thought is built quality. Be it any product headphones, earphones, iPad, or iPhone, they are just incredibly good.
Apple AirPods 2 Pro are on the same track. However, it’s just 4 months of daily use, and no sign of panel squeaks.
Though the glossy design has got tons of scratches! We would advise getting a skin probably the silicone ones.
The same built quality is present on the earbuds. They are strong and have taken a few falls as well and thankfully nothing major other than some normal signs of wear and tear.
Hence, the built quality is not a problem for any Apple device. Therefore, Apple AirPods Pro second Gen gets 9.5/10.
Looks (8/10)
Apple AirPods are distinct as they are only available in white color. You can love it or hate it but that’s how the AirPods lineup is.
Even today Apple is not experimenting with the colors, it has started to look boring, in my honest opinion. Maybe I am getting bored of white tech!
Thankfully, you can buy skins from Amazon or Flipkart to add colors and protection to your expensive audio tech.
As far as design goes, AirPods Pro 2 looks different than others with a slim and wider case. The case is compact and creates no bulge in the pocket. While the earbuds are slightly bigger Apple has managed to keep the case small.
Pro 2 and AirPods 4 look visually very different in the ear just like the AirPods 2. So Apple did give AirPods Pro 2 a visual identity over time.
Hence for looks and availability in just white, we would give it 8/10.
Audio Quality (9.5/10)
The first question we had before getting the Pro was to imagine the audio quality. Will the difference be as noticeable as the price we are paying for? Well, they are very different!
Unlike other brands, Apple never discloses the product’s hardware’s technical numbers like 10mm audio drivers or 35 mAh battery per bud, etc. Instead, they tell how much longer these will go!
Since we don’t know the numbers, let’s break down our experience with Apple AirPods Pro 2 for 4 months!
The sound is clean and clear. Every instrument has its tone and does not overpower vocals. With that said, the bass is an absolute beast on this. All this creates a premium listing experience.
You can always tweak sound settings via the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad. For me, it’s great out of the box.
The beauty lies in distortion-free music at any volume. Did not experience a single crack in bass or during live music. The buds get very loud too! Staying at 100% volume will take courage!
Then comes Spatial audio which surely takes time to get settled. And once you are there, there’s no going back. It takes you to a different zone. Not just hyping, but you need to try AirPods Pro to feel it.
We are most impressed with the audio quality of Apple AirPods Pro 2 and hence here’s 9.5/10!
Call Quality + ANC (9/10)
We liked the call quality on AirPods 2 and little did we know Apple Pro 2 elevated us even further!
A lot is going on with AirPods Pro 2. First, there’s Active Noise Cancellation, Transparency modes, adaptive audio, dual-facing microphones, and much more! What do you get with all this? Well, incredible call quality be it indoors, outdoors, or travelling.
Forget about the outside noise or people chatting, the caller on the end will not complain much. We always wanted a sure-shot confident choice for calling quality and Apple AirPods Pro 2 is the one.
Let’s talk about Active Noise Cancellation as Apple shows incredible ads with vehicles disappearing and much more! In real life, after testing more than 10 ANC earbuds, yes Apple is actually good.
Out of total silence at 100%, you will still be aware of your surroundings at about 80%. Then the transparency mode kicks in and you are in full control.
The overall mechanism of ANC, use of microphones, and customizations from the app make the overall experience “Pro grade”.
Hence, we will sum up call quality and ANC at 9/10.
Battery Backup (8.5/10)
Apple AirPods Pro 2 claims a battery backup of 30 hours. This “battery backup claim” is different from calculating as earbuds work differently than headphones or other gadgets.
After using earbuds for a while and putting them back in the case begins the charging. This keeps on going until the case loses all the battery.
Even then the buds still have some juice left. You can put the case with or without the earbuds on charging. We burst the charging myths about the TWS earbuds that you can read here.
So coming back to the Apple AirPods Pro 2, it claims an overall battery backup of 30 hours. You should know that listening to music, playing games, or calling have different battery consumption.
Regular users mostly use these for media consumption, calling, and casual gaming. We tested all of these and here’s the result. On a single continuous use, you can expect about 6 hours. The buds were tough to die!
If you wear these for about 2 to 4 hours a day, expect to charge once a week. And putting them back in the case for 5 minutes boosts the earbuds to go for an hour!
So battery backup AirPods Pro 2 is good. Sure, this is not the best battery backup, there are many other TWS earbuds 50 hours and above. But they achieve it by being heavy and bulky.
Apple AirPods Pro 2 are good for movie marathons or work meetings. Therefore, it gets 8.5/10.
What if You Lose Your Apple AirPods?
What happens if you lose your AirPods? Let’s talk about Apple’s protective measures.
Apple has a “Find My” App on iOS and Mac that tracks and keeps the information about all Apple products you own. This information will come in handy when you lose the earbuds or they get stolen.
Let’s say you just forgot where you kept them. Thankfully, the Apple AirPods Pro 2 case has a speaker, you can make it ring. Sometimes it takes a couple of seconds and you will hear continuous beeps or tunes.
Apple also keeps track of the last use location that will be pointed on the map. So you can follow the map and collect your AirPods.
The latter method works even if the buds are offline or not connected or the case has no batteries left.
And god forbid these get stolen you can, mark the buds as lost in the app, and Apple will show your ownership information to the person who found it. So hopefully good samaritan gives you back.
Let’s say you just lost only one earbud. Thankfully, all the above steps can be used to find your earbud!
Here’s Apple’s official article with more information you should check out.
Gaming Performance
Even though Apple never talks about gaming performance, we had a good time playing games with these!
There’s hardly any latency or lag between the audio/ video sync over a wireless network. Moreover, the sound direction is quite clear, and guessing enemy footsteps is easy.
We tested a few online multiplayer games and the overall experience was great. Also, note that the minimum device used was an iPhone 13.
Even on Android devices, the gaming experience was good. We’ve tested games on the OnePlus 7, Moto Edge 40, and Moto G84.
If you have gaming needs, Apple AirPods Pro 2 can be a great choice.
Compatibility With Android or Non iOS Devices?
Apple is very smart. If you ever try to pair AirPods to non-Apple products it will have nothing fancy. Just think of it as a regular TWS earbuds.
There’s no slick animation of connection, many basic media controls work like volume control, track change, etc. No Hey Siri or enabling the ANC or transparency mode.
You will know it works and that’s about it! That’s a smart move from Apple. You would think Android lacks but instead, it is Apple stopping their device from connecting with all the features!
So if you have an Android device, be assured to enjoy fewer features. It will “work” but very limited features. For iOS users, it’s all golden!
Customizations
Over the last 5 years, we have reviewed many earbuds, other than this Apple AirPods 2 had almost similar levels of amazing customizations. You can get custom-built skins, cases, and lanyards attached to your Apple AirPods Pro 2.
Apple also allows engraving and getting your logo, name, or whatever is written on the case!
Amazon.in is filled with cases ( silicone, hard plastic, rubber) of cartoon characters or Marvel heroes and whatnot! If you like to customize your earbuds, nothing is as good as AirPods Pro 2.
Apple AirPods 2 Pro an Upgrade From AirPods 2?
In one word, yes it is! AirPods Pro 2 just takes you from good to great. Apple AirPods Pro 2 are expensive and totally worth the extra you spend.
The first noticeable difference was the perfect fit. You get four pairs of ear tips which will help you find the comfortable spot.
Second, the audio quality will feel bass-heavy and tons of detail. Be it anything you play with these, you will be hearing new things; never heard before!
Number 3 will be the call quality, and it’s good. ANC and dual in-word facing microphones are quite well implemented.
Another major difference is the number of controls on Pro AirPods 2. First the touch controls and then so many media controls. It will take you at least a week to totally understand these earbuds.
Overall, AirPods Pro 2 is a Pro device not only a name change. If you have the money to invest, go with AirPods Pro 2. You can also opt for the Apple AirPods 4 with ANC if you need good call quality.
